Feature and Follow #25

This weekly meme is hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee

This week's question:
Who is your favorite villain from a book?

This might sound like a strange answer, but I'm going to have to go with Machina from Julie Kagawa's The Iron Fey series. I say "strange" because he's a villain.... but not. In the first book, yeah, he is definitely the evil guy, but later on in the series, you learn about his past, his motives, and you realize that he's not necessarily the one dimensional bad guy you thought. I liked that even though he was the "villain," he had layers.

But if you want to talk pure evil villains, my pick is Dolores Umbridge. Good gosh that woman is hands down the evilest character in the entire HP series!

Who do you want to be? If you could choose any character from a book. What do you think that character looks like and what do you have in common?

This was a pretty hard question to answer but I'm going to go with Blue Sargent from Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven Boys. She gets to live in a house full of eccentric psychics and befriend the four Raven boys, and believe me, I would LOVE to meet Gansey, Ronan, Adam, and Noah.

Blue and I are both a little weird and not exactly extroverted, but I'd love to be her because I really admire the fact that she loves being different. She owns it really well, even going out of her way to be not normal. She's also stubborn and quite witty, which I'd like to think I am too.

I can't remember her exact description at the moment, but I know that she has short dark hair that's usually a bit messy.

Who is your to-die-for book crush? What do you think they look like?

Ahahahahahahahahaha! Oh lordy, if you've read some of my other posts, then you know that apple of my eye, love of my heart, fire of my loins, etc etc. is none other than Will Herondale from Cassandra Clare's The Infernal Devices series!

I don't remember exact quotes, but Will is a black-haired, blue-eyed BAMF and he is witty as heck. Also, he loves books. Like, really really loves books.

He's snarky and hilarious and at times, somewhat inappropriate, but underneath the bad boy exterior is a beautifully complex character that you will love so much it hurts.

I've always had a hard time picturing book boys as real people, and Tessa did say that Will looked "like every fictional character she had conjured up in her head" which makes him even harder to cast! However, I did see an old picture of Alex Pettyfer from a while ago where the photo was edited so that he had black hair and By The Angel, I could definitely see him as Will.

So are you swooning yet?  :)

Books are turned into movies all the time! Turn it around. What movie would make a really great book?

Ooh this is a toughie considering most movies I watch are adaptions of books!
I am a huge lover of chick flicks so I think How to Lose a Guy in 10 days would make a hilarious book!

This question was actually A LOT harder than I thought it was! Clearly I need to expand my movie niche. ;)

Feel free to leave me a link to your FF, I'm really curious about other people's answers!

Do you mind books with similar ideas similar to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings, or pulled-to-publish fanfiction?

To be honest, reading a similar plot/idea over and over does kind of annoying, but most writers get their influences from somewhere, and if that place is another book, then that's totally fine. What I hate  is reading a story that has been crafted with a cookie-cutter mold that, if some names and places were changed, could be almost exactly like another book.

Having similar ideas or backgrounds or retellings isn't necessarily a bad thing unless the author can successfully make it their own in some way.

This week's question:
What is a deal breaker for you in a book?

Well, bad-editing is definitely one. I HATE it when I'm trying to enjoy a book and my brain keeps getting distracted by all these typo and grammar mistakes. I promise I'm not a grammar nazi, but seeing this problem repeatedly in books drives me nuts!

I also need characters that I can like or identify with. I know that not every character in a book is necessarily relatable, but at the very least, I need to be able to put up with them. Otherwise, there's no way I'm going to trudge through 300 pages reading about people I don't even like.

Well, that's my answer. I'd love it if you could leave me a link to yours in the comments--for some reason, I just love getting to know people's pet peeves!

This week's question:
What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book?

Oh my gosh.
Without a doubt, it would be the dreaded use of INSTALOVE. (That counts as a device or trick right??) I just hate--really really hate--it when I'm reading a book and it's got a great premise and then BAM! The author smacks you in the face with a whopping case of instalove.

I tend to think of instalove as a literary tool utilized by lazy writers....
I'm sorry, that may sound harsh, but would it kill you to give me good romantic development?! I don't want love at first sight! Often times, I end up liking the hate-at-first-site romantic scenario because then I get to actually fall in love with the character.

Well, there's my two cents.
What about you? What do you hate?? Leave me a link below and let me know if you're a new follower! :)

This week's question:
When you step out of your usual genre, what do you like to read? Best books in that genre?

I guess you could say my usual genre is YA--all types of YA. Paranormal. Contemporary. Historical romance. Fantasy. I pretty much read them all. I usually don't step out of that genre, unless it's for school reading, but I guess on the off times that I do, it's to read some adult romance, often Urban Fantasy.
I haven't read a whole lot in that genre, but I do really really like Rachel Vincent's Unbound series!

This week's question:
What book do you think would make a great Halloween movie?

Ooh tough question, I don't usually read books that fit into a creepy Halloween theme...
I guess I'd pick either Clarity by Kim Harrinton because of the great suspense/mystery factor and its awesome awesome psychics, or Deadly Little Secret by Laurie Faria Stolarz because the mystery is so dang creepy! I'd love to see how movie makers would bring the stalker POV to life!

This week's question:

What's the biggest word you've seen used in a book lately- that made you stop and look it up?

I'm recently read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad for AP English and one of the words I looked up was "YAWL" which is a ship's small boat, rowed by a crew of four or six.

  • The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa

This week's question:
What hyped up book do you think was not worth all the talk?

Tough question! I actually had to look through my goodreads lists to refresh my memory!
I'm going to have to go with the House of Night series by P.C. and Kristin Cast and Significance by Shelly Crane.
The House of Night books are just waaaay too clichéd and the characters really annoy me....
Significance is one of those book where I feel like everyone on goodreads just LOVES, but I read it and I'm just like "meh."

This week's question:
What are you reading right now? How do you like it?

I just finished Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan (review coming soon!) and right now I'm reading The Sweetest Spell by Suzanne Selfors. It's a pretty good book--the premise is about a girl gifted with the ability of making chocolate. The world-building is really nice and I have a feeling things are about to get more interesting!

This week's question:
Best cover? What is the best cover of a book you have read and loved?

Oooh this is such a good question! There are so many amazing books with fabulous covers out there, I had a super hard time narrowing it down to just one!
...so I'm going to kinda cheat.
I am huge fan of the covers of Jackson Pearce's fairy tale retellings.

I just love how the covers give a dark edge to the fairy tale, making it simultaneously whimsical and a touch creepy.

So what are your favorite covers? Link me up and I'll be hopping. Happy Friday everyon! :)

Worst cover? What is the worst cover of a book that you've read and loved?

The first book that popped into my head when I read this question was Anna and the French Kiss.
This cover was just SO cheese-tastic that I avoided it like the plague for months! Finally, the raving reviews convinced me to give it a try and I just fell in love with this book!

This week's question:
What blogger inspires you? It can be any kind, it doesn't have to be a book blog.

I'm really inspired by fashion and art blogs. I really like Dulce Candy's blog because she just has such a way with fashion and I get a lot of inspiration for my own wardrobe from her site--plus if you watch her videos on youtube, you know that she's super nice and funny.
Another blog that I get lots of inspiration from is Zsa Zsa Bellagio which has just tons of wonderful pictures from art to photography to fashion to decor which I just cannot help but gawk at!

As for book bloggers, gaaahhhh THERE ARE SO MANY!
Honestly, I get inspired by anyone who's very enthusiastic and passionate about books and reading and shows that through their blog. I definitely get inspiration from Parajunkee because she's just got fabulous posts on books and blogging, the gang at Cuddlebuggery because they're just so honest (and unapologetic) and wonderfully snarky!
But really, there are just so many bloggers out there that I find inspiration from--the list would just be massive!

So who are you inspired by? Leave me a link and I'll be hopping around! :)

This week's question:
What would you do over if you were to start your blog again from scratch?

First off, let's cue the horrified gasp at the very thought of having to start my blog from scratch! This blog is like my baby and if for some crazy reason I lost it and had to start over, I would be devastated! D:

Okay, now to answer the actual question.
Honestly, I can't really pinpoint anything specific that I'd change about my blog. Maybe I would've like to have found The Perfect Layout when I first started--how I wanted to format my reviews, what background/template I wanted to use, etc.
I do wish I knew more about HTML to be able to design my own layout, hey, what can you do? Regardless, I rather like the layout I have right now, though I might change it up soon because I'm just one of those people that sees a new blog background and wants to try it out.
Yes, I am kind of a fickle girl....

This week's question:
Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?

Not really. Most of the time reading automatically puts me in a good mood, regardless of the book. It doesn't really matter what mood I'm in, I will usually reach for whatever book I was going to read next anyways.
Although, I will confess that in moments of masochism, I sometimes pick up Clockwork Prince and read a few chapters of that.... but nnnnnggh.
BAD IDEA.
It always leaves me like this:

Who's ready for the weekend?? I know I am! Ginger @ GReads
has created this super fun meme that poses a bookish question to be answered each week.

This week's questions:
Unexpected books: Which books did you have reservations about reading, but ended up loving once you did?

Oooh I actually have a couple for this!
Before I Fall
At first, I didn't think I'd like reading about a mean girl who has to live the same day over and over and over again.... but then I read it and
AKLDFHALKDFJ.
SO. GOOD.
I completely fell in love with the characters and Lauren Oliver's beautiful writing style.
Cinder
I saw "cyborg Cinderella" and was like: "mehhhhh"
Plus I'm usually not into futuristic novels.
But this one.... ohmygoodness YOU GUYS.
Possibly my favorite Cinderella retelling ever!
Anna and the French Kiss
Don't tell me you didn't think the cover was cheesy.
Vampire Academy
I first picked this book up around the time when vampire novels were EVERYWHERE and I was pretty doubtful about the concept of this story.
And then I read it.
And I went through the whole series in a matter of weeks!

This week's question:
Summer reading. What was your favorite book that you were required to read when you were in school?

I actually have a couple favorites. In 7th grade, I had to read The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, which was very awesome because not only did I not dread doing the reading homework, but I discovered a new favorite series! My next favorite would have to be Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier which is a fantastic gothic romance! Lots of suspense.
And then, of course, there's To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee which is just one of the best classics out there!

I just love it when you find a novel that you really like and you find it through English class of all places!

This week's question:
Christmas in July!! Someone gives you a gift card for 2 books (whatever that costs). What 2 books would you buy?

Hmm, since there aren't any spectacular new releases in July that I'm super psyched for, I'm going to have to go with My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick because it's my favorite summer read of 2012! The story is so beautifully written and I love all the characters!
My next pick would be John Green's The Fault in Our Stars because I absolutely LOVED that book--but I don't have my own copy!
AND. I. NEED. ONE.
