Follow Friday is a really fun way to make new blogger friends and promote your blog in the process! This weekly meme is hosted byAlison Can Read and Parajunkee.
This week's question:
What's the biggest word you've seen used in a book lately- that made you stop and look it up?
I'm recently read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad for AP English and one of the words I looked up was "YAWL" which is a ship's small boat, rowed by a crew of four or six.
lol. For a moment I thought it was another way to spell "Ya'll". Good choice.

Oh my goodness, I had no idea what half the words meant in that book. haha, that may be an exaggeration, but I did not enjoy that one (I read it for AP English too)! Hope you had better luck than I did! Hope you have a great weekend :)

LOL. Was YAWL an abbreviation or something? I never heard that word. I'm a new GFC follower! ;) Feel free to follow me back at http://bookaholicfaggots.blogspot.com. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I really don't know how people put links in their comments.
that word makes me laugh so hard for some reason.

When I first read that, I was thinking "ya'll" like the southern "you all" I would have never thought it had to do with a ship. The word I had to look up came from David Mitchell's novel Cloud Atlas. Check it out here
ReplyDeleteold follower...I would have had to check yawl out as well. I just read in a paragraph tonigh the word obsequious...more info at: bethartfromtheheart.blogspot.com .

Oh my gosh, I hated Heart of Darkness! I admit that I never finished it, but I still think of it as my least favorite book ever. Hope you enjoyed it, though.

I remember having to look that word up when reading Heart of Darkness for the first time. I've actually had to read five times over the course of my education. Old follower.
