My Book Boyfriend: Romeo Montague

My Book Boyfriend is hosted every week by Missie at the Unread Reader---all you have to do is pick an adorable literary boy and give some stats and quotes to show why he is so lovable! Check out the intro post here

NO! I am NOT talking about that Romeo from Shakespeare's play! Okay, well, technically, I am, but I'm not at the same time. Trust me, I don't really care for Shakespeare's Romeo, but Romeo from Juliet Immortal, by Stacey Jay was totally crushworthy.... even if he was technically kind of evil. Kinda weird that I'm book-boyfriending him? Maybe....

Juliet's POV

"He is a romantic, a dreamer, and never afraid to play the fool. He is fearless and reckless and brave  and I love him for it. Desperately."

"We're soul mates," he says. "We are forever. Our kind of love cannot be destroyed."

He stops, looking at me, eyes filled with sadness. "You would have died cursing my name, cursing the day you met me and the day I killed your cousin. You would have died poisoned with hate, and it would have destroyed my soul. And yours. I couldn't bear the thought of it. I loved you too much. I swear that I did, that I do...or at least, that I will again if you'll give me the chance."

 Romeo's POV

"For a moment, that one shining moment this morning when I thought the glow around Juliet's heart was for me, I felt... happiness. No, more than happiness. I felt... hope, the spark of something pure, flashing like lightning through the dry air, setting thins crackling inside me."

"Again and again and again, her name rips from my lips, howls through my mind. Juliet! I know better than to pray, but still something inside me begs the universe for mercy. Let her have someone on her side, someone to save her from the specter that would take her and from the hell that awaits. Someone to save her from me."

"I loved her all along. I didn't realize how much until she was gone, until I was returned to my body and crept back to the place where she died and touched her lifeless hand, cried over her wide, sightless eye. Juliet. My Juliet. Her soul is gone forever. I can feel the difference in the universe, the absence that is a world with one less spot of light. I tried to save her. I hope, in some fashion, I did. I hope she's at peace in the mist... or wherever it is good people go."

Review: Juliet Immortal

Juliet Immortal
by Stacey Jay

Published August 9th 2011 by Delacorte Books for Young Readers

The most tragic love story in history . . .

Juliet Capulet didn't take her own life. She was murdered by the person she trusted most, her new husband, Romeo Montague, a sacrifice made to ensure his own immortality. But what Romeo didn't anticipate was that Juliet would be granted eternity, as well, and would become an agent for the Ambassadors of Light. For 700 years, she's fought Romeo for the souls of true lovers, struggling to preserve romantic love and the lives of the innocent. Until the day she meets someone she's forbidden to love, and Romeo, oh Romeo, will do everything in his power to destroy that love.

 -goodreads

“She will fight for light, and he for dark,
Battling through the ages for loves sweet spark.
Wherever two souls adore truly, you will find them, lo,
The brave Juliet and the wicked Romeo.”

Rating: 3 stars
Review:
Hrmm..... where to begin. The thing is, I really really really wanted to love this book! I was so excited about it for months and months! And when I finally read it......
It kind of fell short of my expectations.
Don't get me wrong, the book was extremely creative and original. Heck, I wish I could think up a twist to a timeless love story like that! I really feel like the premise of the book--Romeo vs. Juliet, fighting for soul mates, etc--was SO brilliant and had so much potential ....it's just that the actual storyline just didn't really live up to it.

Jay's Juliet was fine. I really liked how she worked to reconcile her own bitterness and hate from her death with being an Ambassador of Light. I loved that she had hate in her heart, but at the same time was truly a good person: strong, kind, and selfless.

Romeo, oh evil Romeo, where the heck were you when I was reading Shakespeare's play?? I know he's supposed to be all evil and a Mercenary and everything, but I actually really liked him. OKAY, so he did have some kinda evil moments, but the thing is, it's hard to hate a character that already hates himself so much for a past mistake. He was definitely a complex character.... and, unfortunately, I'm kind of a sucker for those.

The part of the book that really bothered me was...... okay, I'm just gonna come out and say it:
I did not like the love story aspect of the book!
GUYS. This almost never happens. Oh, and just to clarify, I'm talking about the Juliet-and-Ben relationship here. Nothing against Ben, really--the guy is definitely someone a LOT of girls would fall for, and believe me, he had his swoon-worthy moments..... but I just didn't see the connection, y'know? With Juliet and Ben, it was a total love-at-first-sight kind of thing. And I'm just not a fan of the whole instalove relationship. I didn't really see them falling for each other and connecting. And that really bothered me. Like, througout the entire book.

A part of me really wanted Juliet and Romeo to somehow end up together--because, come on, they're freaking Romeo and Juliet! Even if the technicalities of their love story wasn't all that lovely and technically Romeo was evil, they're so iconic as the greatest love story couple that I just really wanted them to somehow salvage the love story! And maybe, I would've been okay with the fact that Juliet did fall in love with someone else... but there wasn't even an actual connection between Juliet and Ben! I ended up being more excited for the Romeo-Juliet scenes than the Ben-Juliet scenes!

On another note, though, I will be reading the sequel, because hello? Romeo Redeemed? A whole book about bad boy Romeo? Oh, I am so there! Unfortunately, I'm not all that excited because be his turn to fall in love with someone, and of all the people, it had to be Ariel. Don't know how I feel about that yet, but we'll see...

WANT NOW!!!

"The most tragic love story in history . . .

Juliet Capulet didn't take her own life. She was murdered by the person she trusted most, her new husband, Romeo Montague, a sacrifice made to ensure his own immortality..."

 "Joy Delamere is suffocating...

From asthma, which has nearly claimed her life. From her parents, who will do anything to keep that from happening. From dangerous Asher, who is smothering her from the inside out.

Joy can take her cruel words until the night they go too far.

Now, Joy will leave everything behind to find the one who has offered his help, a homeless boy called Creed. She will become someone else. She will learn to survive. She will breathe…if only she can get to Creed before it’s too late."

blurb doesn't sound absolutely to-die-for, but I've been seeing such great reviews!

"When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear..."

"My name—my True Name—is Ashallayn’ darkmyr Tallyn. I am the last remaining son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. And I am dead to her. My fall began, as many stories do, with a girl..."

Oh. Mygoodness. I have LOVED every freaking minute of this series and now it's ENDING?! I need to get my hands on this book....

"In search of a future that may not exist and faced with the decision of who to share it with, Cassia journeys to the Outer Provinces in pursuit of Ky - taken by the Society to his certain death - only to find that he has escaped, leaving a series of clues in his wake."

I read the first book a while back and thought it was pretty good (3.5-4 stars) but I'm really itching to read THIS one because it's going to have Ky's POV too! *fangirl squeal!*

Dang, how I wish I had all the money in the world to buy books! Oh well, if wishes were fishes, then even beggars would eat.
